A Question That Sounds Like Scepticism

In 2012, during a now-famous exchange at the Creation Museum in Kentucky, a small girl asked Ken Ham about the age of the dinosaurs. Ham turned her question back on her with the phrase he has deployed hundreds of times in debates, lectures, and promotional videos: “Were you there?” The audience laughed with evident appreciation. The girl, understandably, had no immediate answer. Ham smiled, satisfied that the matter was settled. What had just happened, in terms of actual epistemology, was that a grown man had responded to a legitimate question about evidence by demanding eyewitness testimony for events that occurred millions of years before eyewitnesses existed, and then treating the absence of that testimony as a decisive refutation of geology, palaeontology, cosmology, and evolutionary biology simultaneously.

This is the “observational versus historical science” distinction, as promoted by Ham and his intellectual predecessor Kent Hovind, and it is one of the most rhetorically effective and intellectually dishonest moves in the creationist playbook. The argument runs as follows: science conducted by direct observation in the present is reliable and trustworthy; science that attempts to reconstruct events in the unobserved past is inherently speculative and therefore no more credible than the Genesis account.

Astronomy, geology, palaeontology, and evolutionary biology are thus demoted to a lower epistemic tier, while the opening chapters of a Bronze Age text are promoted to the same tier, on the grounds that nobody observed either one. The asymmetry that this creates, whereby present-day observation is held to a rigorous evidential standard but ancient scripture is exempted from any evidential standard at all, goes unexamined in the original formulation. It deserves rather more scrutiny than it typically receives.

What follows is an extended examination of why the distinction fails, why the sciences it attempts to demote are in fact among the most rigorously tested bodies of knowledge humans have ever assembled, and why accepting the “Were you there?” standard consistently would require us to demolish not just evolutionary biology but forensic science, criminal justice, archaeology, and much of medicine. The argument is not that Ham and Hovind are bad people. The argument is that their epistemological framework is incoherent, that it applies a standard of evidence selectively in order to protect a predetermined conclusion, and that the sciences they dismiss have, repeatedly and publicly, made predictions about the unobserved past that were subsequently confirmed by exactly the kind of present-day observation they claim to trust.

1. What the Distinction Actually Claims

Before proceeding it is worth stating the creationist position as charitably as possible, because the argument has a surface plausibility that explains its rhetorical success, particularly with audiences who have not thought carefully about the philosophy of science. The basic intuition is not entirely unreasonable: there is a difference between watching a chemical reaction happen in a laboratory and inferring what happened in a rock four hundred million years ago. Direct observation does carry a certain epistemic immediacy that retrospective inference lacks. Any honest philosopher of science would acknowledge that reconstruction involves additional inferential steps beyond direct observation, and that additional inferential steps create additional opportunities for error.

Ham and Hovind take this intuition and inflate it into an absolute categorical distinction. Observational science, in their framework, proceeds by direct, repeatable, present-tense experiment. Historical science proceeds by inference about the past and is therefore not repeatable in the same way. Because it is not repeatable, they argue, it cannot be falsified by present experience, and because it cannot be falsified, a biblical account of origins is as epistemically justified as any scientific account. The move is elegant in its simplicity and devastating in its apparent implications, provided one does not look too carefully at either half of the distinction.

The first problem is the claim that historical inference is not testable or falsifiable. This is straightforwardly wrong, and the rest of this essay is largely an extended demonstration of why. The second problem is the implicit claim that Genesis-based creationism constitutes an acceptable alternative framework for understanding origins, despite being entirely insulated from the evidential standards being demanded of science. The third problem, which this essay returns to at length, is that the distinction is applied with a selectivity that reveals its true purpose: not to advance epistemological clarity but to protect a specific religious commitment from evidential challenge.

2. Forensic Science and the Courtroom Reductio

The most immediate and practically devastating response to the “Were you there?” challenge is to ask what happens when we apply it consistently to domains of knowledge that even Ham’s audience accepts as legitimate. When a detective arrives at a crime scene, nobody was there to witness the murder except, in most cases, the murderer and the victim. The detective reconstructs the past from present evidence: blood spatter patterns, ballistic trajectories, DNA profiles, fibre transfers, digital timestamps. No criminologist directly observed the moment of death. Yet nobody seriously argues that criminal convictions based on forensic evidence are epistemically equivalent to guesswork, or that the prosecution’s case is no better founded than a random assertion about what might have happened.

The reason we accept forensic reconstruction as reliable knowledge is not that it is based on direct observation of the past event. It is based on known physical, chemical, and biological processes operating in the present, combined with the principle that those same processes were operating in the same way when the crime was committed. A DNA profile reconstructs a unique genetic identity from molecular evidence using our present understanding of how DNA replication and degradation work. A blood spatter analysis reconstructs the direction and force of an impact using our present understanding of fluid dynamics and surface tension. These are exactly the same inferential moves that geology makes when it dates a rock stratum, that astronomy makes when it estimates the distance of a star, and that palaeontology makes when it identifies the age and lineage of a fossil.

Directing the “Were you there?” challenge at the geological timescale means directing it as an equally valid challenge at every forensic conviction in every court in the world. The detective was not there. The forensic analyst was not there. The jury was not there. By Ham’s logic, no reconstruction of an unobserved past event can be trusted, and every person currently imprisoned on the basis of forensic evidence has grounds for immediate appeal. This is not a consequence that Ham or Hovind is willing to accept, because they accept forensic science’s authority in practice, which means they are not actually operating on the epistemological principle they articulate. They are applying the challenge selectively, only to sciences whose conclusions conflict with Genesis, while exempting sciences whose conclusions are irrelevant to creationism. That selective application is not scepticism. It is motivated reasoning dressed up in philosophical clothing.

3. Astronomy and the Light That Left Before Anyone Was Watching

The case of astronomy is particularly instructive, because it involves a form of historical inference so direct and concrete that it is difficult to dismiss without abandoning the entire discipline. When an astronomer observes a star one hundred light-years away, the light entering the telescope left that star one hundred years ago. The astronomer is, quite literally, observing the past. Every photograph of a distant galaxy is a photograph of something that happened millions or billions of years ago, in some cases before the Earth existed. Observational astronomy, in the most literal sense, is historical science: what is being observed through the instrument is not the present state of the universe but its past state, preserved in light that has been travelling since before human civilisation began.

The Hubble Space Telescope’s deep field images show galaxies as they existed roughly thirteen billion years ago, not long after the Big Bang. These images were obtained by direct, repeatable observation using instruments whose function is grounded in well-understood physics. Yet the events being observed happened billions of years before any human being existed. Nobody was there to witness them. By Ham’s criterion, these observations should carry no more epistemic weight than speculation. In practice, they constitute some of the most precisely calibrated measurements in human scientific history, and the cosmological model they support has been confirmed by independent lines of evidence including the cosmic microwave background radiation, the abundance of light elements, and the Hubble expansion constant, all of which agree with one another to extraordinary precision.

The creationist framework offers no coherent account of why the light currently entering our telescopes from distant galaxies appears to show a universe thirteen billion years old, if the universe is actually six thousand years old. The most common response, that God created the light already in transit in order to give the appearance of deep time, creates a theological problem that dwarfs the scientific one: it requires us to believe that the universe was designed to systematically deceive every astronomer who has ever lived. This is not a minor theological quibble. It is a direct implication of any version of young-earth cosmology that takes the speed of light and the distances of galaxies seriously, and it attributes to the creator a commitment to large-scale deception that conflicts rather awkwardly with the moral attributes typically assigned to him.

4. Geology and the Uniformitarian Principle

Ham’s objection to geological dating rests on the claim that we cannot know whether physical processes operated the same way in the distant past as they do today. If the rates of radioactive decay, erosion, sedimentation, and plate movement were different in the past, then all the ages derived from present-day measurements of those processes would be unreliable. This sounds, on first hearing, like a principled philosophical objection. On examination, it is a post hoc rationalisation that requires the wholesale abandonment of physical law.

The rate of radioactive decay is determined by the fundamental properties of atomic nuclei, specifically the balance between the strong nuclear force and the electrostatic repulsion within the nucleus. These properties are not variable parameters that could have been different in the past without altering the entire structure of physics and chemistry. If radioactive decay rates were significantly different six thousand years ago, then so were the properties of all atomic bonds, the behaviour of all chemical reactions, the stability of all molecules, and the behaviour of all biological systems. Arguing that radiometric dating is unreliable because decay rates might have been different in the past is simultaneously arguing that the entire physical and chemical basis of life as we understand it might have been different in the past, which is not a modest epistemic concession but a complete dissolution of the possibility of scientific knowledge of any kind.

Moreover, radiometric dating does not rely on a single method. Uranium-lead dating, potassium-argon dating, rubidium-strontium dating, and carbon-14 dating are based on entirely different decay chains with different half-lives, different parent and daughter elements, and different physical mechanisms. When these independent methods, applied to the same rock samples, converge on the same age estimates, the probability of that convergence arising from simultaneous, coordinated errors across all methods is vanishingly small. The convergence itself is a form of present-day, repeatable observation that confirms the historical inference. Dismissing it requires dismissing the entire edifice of nuclear physics, which underpins not only geological dating but nuclear medicine, power generation, and every piece of technology that depends on the predictable behaviour of atomic structure.

Stephen Jay Gould, writing about the relationship between geological time and our understanding of human significance, captured what is really at stake in these debates: “Each of the major sciences has contributed an essential ingredient in our long retreat from an initial belief in our own cosmic importance. Astronomy defined our home as a small planet tucked away in one corner of an average galaxy among millions; biology took away our status as paragons created in the image of God; geology gave us the immensity of time and taught us how little of it our own species has occupied.” The creationist rejection of geological deep time is not, at its root, a scientific argument. It is a resistance to what geology tells us about our place in the universe, dressed in the language of epistemological scruple.

5. Predictions, Fossil Fish, and the Tiktaalik Test

The strongest possible response to the claim that historical science cannot be tested is to point to cases where historical science made precise, falsifiable predictions about unobserved past events and those predictions were subsequently confirmed by new observational evidence. The discovery of Tiktaalik roseae is perhaps the most dramatic example of this kind of predictive power in the recent history of palaeontology, and it deserves to be explained in some detail, because it exposes the “Were you there?” challenge as not merely philosophically confused but empirically ignorant.

By the early 2000s, evolutionary biologists and palaeontologists had a well-developed picture of the transition from fish to tetrapods, the four-limbed vertebrates that eventually gave rise to amphibians, reptiles, and mammals. The fossil record showed lobe-finned fish on one side and early tetrapods on the other, with a transitional gap in the record roughly around 375 million years ago. Neil Shubin, Edward Daeschler, and Farish Jenkins used the known date of that gap, combined with the known geology of rock strata of the appropriate age, to identify where in the world they would need to look for the transitional fossil they expected to find.

They calculated that freshwater sedimentary rocks of approximately 375 million years in age, of a type that could preserve shallow-water organisms, would be the target. Working from those geological and evolutionary predictions, they identified Ellesmere Island in the Canadian Arctic as a promising location. After several years of fieldwork, they found exactly what the theory predicted: a creature with a flat head, a mobile neck, and fins that contained the rudimentary bone structure of a wrist and forearm, positioned in rocks of precisely the predicted age.

This is not reconstruction after the fact. It is prediction in advance. The evolutionary framework, combined with the geological timescale that Ham dismisses as unreliable historical science, specified not merely that a transitional form should exist but roughly when it should have lived and therefore where in the rock record it should be found. The prediction was tested, in exactly the way that Ham claims historical science cannot be tested, and the test produced the predicted result. Shubin documented the whole process in his book “Your Inner Fish” with a clarity that makes the sequence of prediction, search, and confirmation impossible to misread.

A scientific framework that cannot be tested does not produce results of this kind. It does not identify a specific Arctic island, predict a specific type of rock formation, predict a specific time range, and then unearth the specific type of creature the theory required. That sequence is not speculation; it is science working precisely as it should.

Creationism, by contrast, has produced no comparable predictions. It has not identified a location where a fossil should be found and then found it there. It has not predicted the genetic relationship between species that has subsequently been confirmed by DNA sequencing. It has not predicted the distribution of ancient rocks that has been confirmed by satellite imaging. It has not predicted anything of the kind. It has, instead, applied itself to the reinterpretation of evidence discovered by other frameworks, a process that is always possible because any sufficiently determined advocate can find an alternative explanation for any individual piece of evidence, but that produces no new discoveries and therefore provides no independent confirmation of its own claims.

6. The Principle of Uniformity Is Not an Assumption: It Is a Tested Conclusion

Ham’s argument against geological and cosmological dating rests on the claim that uniformitarianism, the principle that physical laws operate consistently across time and space, is an unprovable assumption. This is a common creationist talking point and it has the superficial appearance of sophisticated philosophy of science. In practice, it misrepresents both what uniformitarianism claims and the evidential basis on which it rests.

Uniformitarianism does not claim that the rates of all geological processes have always been exactly what they are today. Modern geology explicitly incorporates catastrophic events, mass extinctions, periods of rapid continental reorganisation, and episodes of dramatically accelerated volcanism. What uniformitarianism asserts is that the physical laws governing those processes, the laws of thermodynamics, electromagnetism, gravity, and nuclear physics, have been constant. This is an empirically supported claim, not a gratuitous assumption.

The evidence for the constancy of physical law comes from multiple sources. Spectroscopic analysis of light from distant galaxies shows that the same atomic spectral lines appear in the same positions in the spectrum, indicating that the structure of atoms and the electromagnetic constant have not changed measurably over billions of years of cosmic history. Pulsar timing studies constrain the variation of the gravitational constant to less than one part in ten billion per year.

The consistency of nuclear physics across billions of light-years of space and billions of years of time is not a faith commitment; it is the best-supported conclusion available from the totality of physical observation. Rejecting it in order to preserve a six-thousand-year timeline is not scepticism; it is the abandonment of all empirical constraint in favour of a preferred conclusion, which is precisely the intellectual manoeuvre that the creationist accusation of “assumption” is designed to disguise.

Robert G. Ingersoll, writing more than a century ago but with a clarity that has not dated, described the posture that produces arguments like these: “These men are the enemies of science, of intellectual progress. They ridicule and calumniate the great thinkers. They deny everything that conflicts with the ‘sacred Scriptures.’ They still believe in the astronomy of Joshua and the geology of Moses. They believe in the miracles of the past, and deny the demonstrations of the present. They are the foes of facts, the enemies of knowledge.” The specific names have changed since Ingersoll wrote those words in 1896, but the epistemological profile he identified has remained constant across every generation of creationist argument since.

7. The Philosophy of Science the Creationists Invoke Against Itself

There is a certain irony in the fact that Ham and Hovind appeal to Popperian falsifiability, the principle that genuine scientific claims must be falsifiable, in order to argue that historical science is unscientific, because their own position is the paradigm case of an unfalsifiable claim. Young-earth creationism makes no predictions that could in principle be disconfirmed. When the fossil record fails to match creationist expectations, the response is not to revise the theory but to propose that the global flood arranged the fossils, or that radioactive decay rates were different, or that God created species with apparent age already built in. Every piece of contrary evidence is assimilated through auxiliary hypotheses, each of which is itself untestable and each of which further insulates the core claim from contact with reality.

This is the exact opposite of the scientific method, not a different version of it. A research programme that can absorb any result without revision is not a rigorous alternative to conventional science; it is the abandonment of the requirement that claims be constrained by evidence at all. When creationists demand that evolutionary biology meet a standard of direct eyewitness observation that it cannot by its very nature satisfy, while simultaneously exempting their own preferred account from any evidential test whatsoever, they are not applying a consistent epistemological principle. They are applying a rhetorical weapon selectively, aimed only at the conclusions they dislike.

Carl Sagan, whose reflections on the relationship between science and religious claims remain as pertinent as they were when he wrote them, identified exactly this dynamic: “A clear prediction in an area undergoing vigorous study permits doctrines to be subject to disproof. The last posture a bureaucratic religion wishes to find itself in is vulnerability to disproof, where an experiment can be performed on which the religion stands or falls.” The observational versus historical science distinction is, in this light, not a contribution to the philosophy of science but a strategy for ensuring that creationism never has to stand in the position Sagan describes.

If historical evidence cannot challenge Genesis, then nothing that has ever been found in the ground, the sky, or the laboratory can challenge Genesis, and the doctrine is permanently safe from every form of empirical disconfirmation. That is not epistemological rigour. It is epistemological immunity, which is precisely what distinguishes a doctrine from a theory.

8. Ice Cores, Tree Rings, and the Multiplication of Independent Witnesses

One of the characteristics of a well-supported scientific conclusion is that it is confirmed by multiple independent lines of evidence that have no obvious reason to agree with one another. The age of the Earth and the timescale of geological and biological history are supported by a convergence of evidence so extensive and so varied that the probability of all of it being simultaneously mistaken, for the reasons Ham proposes, approaches zero for all practical purposes.

Ice cores drilled from the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets preserve annual layers going back more than eight hundred thousand years, and the chemical composition of air bubbles trapped in those layers allows scientists to reconstruct past concentrations of atmospheric gases and temperature variations with extraordinary precision. These records cannot be reconciled with a global flood six thousand years ago, because the layers are continuous, undisturbed, and extend far beyond any possible six-thousand-year accumulation. They also correlate with independent climate records from ocean sediment cores, cave stalagmites, and coral growth records, all of which track the same climatic variations through entirely different physical mechanisms.

The agreement between these independent archives, derived from radically different materials using radically different analytical techniques, is not what you would expect from a collection of mutually reinforcing errors. It is what you would expect from a collection of independent methods all accurately recording the same history.

Dendrochronology, the dating of events by the analysis of tree ring sequences, provides an independent timescale extending back roughly fourteen thousand years, calibrated against radiocarbon dating and correlated across overlapping sequences from living and subfossil trees in different parts of the world. This record crosses the supposed date of Noah’s flood multiple times without any sign of the global disruption that a flood covering all mountains would necessarily produce. The dendrochronological record is itself present-day observational science, in Ham’s terms, because we are directly observing the rings in existing wood samples today.

The inference to historical events follows directly from well-understood principles of botany and dendrochronology. The “Were you there?” challenge has no purchase here, because the observation is happening in a laboratory in the present, and what it reveals is a continuous record of annual growth that simply does not accommodate a catastrophic global flood within the last ten thousand years.

Coral reefs provide yet another independent clock. The growth rates of coral are well-understood and subject to seasonal variation that creates annual banding, analogous to tree rings. Reef systems in the Pacific extend back tens of thousands of years in continuous, undisturbed growth, which is flatly incompatible with a global flood within the last ten thousand years. The Great Barrier Reef system contains coral structures that are twenty thousand years old. A global flood would not merely interrupt the record; it would destroy it entirely.

The fact that continuous, undisturbed growth records of this kind exist in multiple reef systems around the world is not easy to explain away, and the attempts that have been made to do so invoke miraculous processes of recovery and regrowth that have no parallel in any observed coral biology and that, conveniently, left no detectable trace in the chemistry or structure of the surviving reef.

9. The Genetics of Deep Time

Perhaps the most powerful modern confirmation of the evolutionary timescale comes from molecular genetics, a field that did not exist when Darwin wrote and that was not anticipated in any way by the fossil record alone. The genetic relationships between species, revealed by DNA sequencing, agree with extraordinary precision with the branching pattern predicted by the fossil record and the timescale established by geology. These are entirely independent sources of evidence, derived from different physical substrates using different methodologies, and they tell the same story.

Human and chimpanzee genomes share approximately 98.7 per cent of their DNA sequence. Human and mouse genomes share approximately 85 per cent. Human and yeast genomes share roughly 31 per cent. These figures not only confirm the branching pattern of evolutionary relationships but, when combined with known mutation rates, allow molecular biologists to estimate the dates of common ancestors, and those estimates agree with the fossil record to a degree that could not be coincidental unless the entire framework, genetics, palaeontology, and geology, were all independently wrong in a way that happened to produce consistent results. The probability of that coincidence, under any random error model, is so vanishingly small as to constitute a decisive confirmation of the common framework.

More specifically, the human genome contains dozens of endogenous retroviral insertions, remnants of ancient viral infections that became incorporated into the genome of our ancestors. These insertions are found at the same chromosomal positions in the genomes of chimpanzees, gorillas, and other great apes. The probability of the same viral insertion landing in the same position in the genomes of multiple independently created species, by coincidence, is infinitesimally small. The parsimonious explanation is that these species share a common ancestor in whose genome the insertion occurred, and whose descendants inherited it at the same chromosomal location.

These molecular fossils constitute directly observable present-day records of a past event, the kind of present-day observational evidence that Ham’s framework claims to trust. The fossil record said these species share ancestry; the genome confirmed that conclusion independently; and the confirmation arrived from a branch of science that did not exist when palaeontologists made the original prediction.

What makes the genetics evidence particularly difficult for creationism to handle is that it was not merely consistent with evolutionary predictions; it was specifically predicted by evolutionary theory before the relevant sequencing technology existed. The expectation that closely related species would share non-functional genetic elements inherited from common ancestors was a logical deduction from the evolutionary framework. When the technology arrived and the sequences were read, the prediction was confirmed in detail. This is the mark of a productive scientific theory: it tells you what you should find before you look, and when you look, you find it.

Creationism predicted none of this. It cannot account for why independently created species should share identical viral insertion sites in their genomes, and the explanations offered after the fact, that God reused genetic material, or that shared sequences reflect shared function rather than shared ancestry, are not predictions that were made in advance and are therefore not confirmations of any framework.

10. The Asymmetry at the Heart of the Argument

All of the specific scientific arguments made above converge on a single philosophical point that deserves to be stated plainly before proceeding. The observational versus historical science distinction is not applied symmetrically by its proponents. It is applied asymmetrically and strategically, in a way that reveals its true function.

Consider what happens when we direct the question at the Genesis account itself. The Genesis narrative describes events that occurred, on the creationist timeline, six thousand years ago. No living person was there. The text was written, on even the most conservative scholarly dating, centuries after the events it purports to describe. The humans who wrote it were not present at the creation of the universe, the formation of the Earth, the creation of the first humans, or the global flood. Under Ham’s own criterion, the Genesis account is historical science in precisely the same sense as geology and cosmology: it is an account of past events derived by inference rather than direct observation. There is no logical basis on which to exempt it from the epistemic challenge that is routinely directed at evolutionary biology.

Ham’s response to this point is that the Genesis account was revealed by God, who was present. But this response simply relocates the evidential question rather than answering it. The claim that Genesis represents divine revelation is itself a claim about the past that requires historical and evidential support.

What evidence do we have that the text of Genesis represents an accurate transmission of divine communication rather than a human composition reflecting the cosmological assumptions of ancient Near Eastern culture? The answer is that we have exactly the same type of evidence we have for any ancient document: textual analysis, historical comparison, archaeological context. That evidence, examined carefully, does not support the claim of literal divine authorship. On the contrary, it reveals a text that shares its cosmological framework, its flood narrative, and many of its specific details with other ancient Near Eastern traditions that predate the biblical text, including the Atrahasis Epic and the Epic of Gilgamesh, traditions that no serious scholar claims were divinely revealed.

The question is not whether past events can be known through inference. Clearly they can: this is what courts, historians, forensic scientists, geologists, and cosmologists do every day with high reliability. The question is which inferences are better supported by the available evidence. The answer, from every independent line of investigation that has ever been brought to bear on the question, is that the scientific account of deep time, biological evolution, and cosmological history is supported by a convergence of evidence so extensive and so mutually confirming that to reject it requires either the wholesale abandonment of the epistemic standards we apply everywhere else, or the special pleading of miraculous exemptions that are themselves untestable and therefore scientifically meaningless.

11. What the Challenge Reveals About Creationist Epistemology

Examining the “Were you there?” challenge carefully, a pattern emerges that runs through the broader creationist project. The pattern is not one of genuine scepticism applied consistently to all claims, but of motivated scepticism applied selectively to claims that conflict with a predetermined conclusion, combined with motivated credulity applied to claims that support it. This is the epistemological profile of apologetics, not of inquiry.
