Spend twenty minutes on almost any social-media platform and you will encounter it: a short video, a carousel of graphics, or a thread of quotations asserting that the Quran, revealed in seventh-century Arabia, contains a description of human embryological development so precise that it could only have been produced by divine knowledge. The claim is not new, but it is travelling with a velocity that older forms of apologetics never managed, because short-form video is an extraordinarily efficient medium for transmitting assertions and an extraordinarily poor one for subjecting them to scrutiny. A fifteen-second clip can show a Quranic verse, display a diagram of a human embryo, and place the two side by side before the viewer has time to ask the most elementary question: where did the information in that verse actually come from?
This essay is an attempt to answer that question carefully and without caricature. The argument for Quranic embryology as a scientific miracle deserves to be examined at its strongest, which means engaging with the actual Arabic text, with the history of embryological knowledge in the ancient world, and with the specific claims made by the most sophisticated advocates of the position. The conclusion, reached through that examination, is that the Quran’s embryological passages reflect the medical knowledge available in seventh-century Arabia, knowledge that derived substantially from the Greek physician Galen of Pergamon, who had articulated a detailed and largely similar account of embryonic development some four centuries earlier. The Quran’s account is not miraculous. It is a historical document shaped by a specific intellectual context, and that distinction matters profoundly, because a community of believers is being asked to rest the credibility of their faith on evidence that, on inspection, points in precisely the opposite direction from the one being claimed.
1. The Case as Its Advocates Make It
The central Quranic passage in question is Surah Al-Mu’minun (23:12-14), which in a standard English rendering reads approximately as follows: “And certainly did We create man from an extract of clay. Then We placed him as a sperm-drop in a firm lodging. Then We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, and We made the clot into a lump of flesh, and We made the lump into bones, and We clothed the bones with flesh; then We developed him into another form. So blessed is Allah, the best of creators.” Additional passages, including those in Surah Al-Hajj (22:5) and Surah Al-Qiyamah (75:37-39), are often cited alongside this one to construct a composite picture of embryonic development that advocates then compare with modern scientific understanding.
The most prominent academic advocate of the miracle claim was the late Keith Moore, a Canadian anatomist whose textbook on clinical embryology became a standard reference in medical education. In the 1980s, Moore collaborated with Muslim scholars on an edition of his work that included Quranic verses alongside his anatomical descriptions, and he endorsed the view that the Quranic account anticipated discoveries that science had taken centuries to make. His involvement gave the claim an institutional credibility it had not previously possessed. Muslim apologists have been citing Moore’s endorsement ever since, and it circulates in social-media content today as though it were an independent scientific verification rather than a single scholar’s opinion produced in a specific collaborative context. Moore himself later qualified some of his statements, though the qualified versions circulate considerably less widely than the original endorsements.
The argument, in its essentials, runs as follows. The Arabic terms used in the Quranic verses, when correctly translated and interpreted, map onto stages of embryonic development that were unknown to seventh-century Arabs and that modern embryology has subsequently confirmed. The term nutfah, usually translated as “sperm-drop,” captures the germinal stage. The term alaqah, usually translated as “clot” or “leech-like thing,” describes the implanted embryo’s appearance and behaviour. The term mudghah, translated as “lump of chewed flesh,” describes the somite stage, when the embryo appears segmented. The bones-before-flesh sequence is then said to correspond to the fact that the cartilaginous skeleton develops before the muscular system fully forms. None of this, the argument concludes, could have been known without divine revelation.
This is the case at its most coherent. It is not an absurd case, which is precisely why it requires a thorough rather than a dismissive response. Each element of it, when examined against the available historical evidence, turns out to have an explanation that requires no appeal to the supernatural whatsoever.
2. The Vocabulary Predates the Revelation
One of the most straightforward ways to test whether a text contains knowledge that its author could not have possessed is to ask whether the specific terms and concepts in that text appear elsewhere in the same cultural context before the text was written. In the case of the Quranic embryological vocabulary, the answer is unambiguous: those terms appear widely in pre-Islamic Arabic, and their meanings were not technical in any scientific sense that would require divine assistance to formulate.
The term alaqah, which is the centrepiece of the miracle claim and is variously translated as “clinging clot,” “leech,” or “attached thing,” appears in pre-Islamic Arabic poetry in contexts that have nothing to do with human embryology. Classical Arabic poetry, the muallaqat and related compositions that predate the revelation of the Quran by generations, uses the term to describe clinging, attachment, and coagulation in several different registers, including the description of animal embryos in camel husbandry contexts. The camel was the central economic animal of seventh-century Arabian society, and the observation of camel reproduction, including miscarried or expelled foetal material, was a routine part of pastoral life. A population that made its living with camels would have been familiar with the appearance of embryonic material at various stages of development, and the term alaqah to describe something clinging or leech-like was already part of the descriptive vocabulary available to any Arabic speaker of the period.
Similarly, the term mudghah, the “chewed lump,” appears in pre-Islamic Arabic in contexts suggesting something bitten or masticated, describing the appearance of material that looks as though it has been subjected to chewing. This is a vivid observational metaphor, not a technical anatomical term requiring divine revelation. Any observer who had seen a miscarried early embryo, whether human or animal, could arrive at that description independently. The somite ridges of an early embryo do produce an appearance superficially resembling teeth marks, and this is the kind of observation that any attentive midwife, shepherd, or physician in any culture might make without supernatural assistance.
The vocabulary of the Quranic embryology is, in short, the vocabulary of the culture in which the Quran emerged. This does not diminish the literary power of the text or the sincerity of those who composed and received it. It does, however, remove the premise on which the miracle claim rests, namely that these terms encode knowledge unavailable to their contemporaries. The observations behind those terms were accessible to ordinary experience. The question is not where the Quran’s author found them, but why the claim of miraculous uniqueness is being advanced with such confidence in the absence of any serious engagement with the pre-Islamic Arabic literary and pastoral record.
When advocates of the miracle claim respond to this point, they typically argue that the Quranic terms are being used with a precision that the pre-Islamic usage does not carry, and that the correspondence with modern embryological stages is too exact to be explained by ordinary observational vocabulary. This is a version of the argument that requires the interpreter to start with modern embryological knowledge and read it backwards into the ancient text, which is precisely the methodological problem that we will examine at length in a later section. For now, the point stands: the vocabulary of the miracle claim was available to seventh-century Arabs through their own pastoral and literary tradition, without any requirement of divine revelation.
3. Galen Was There Four Centuries Earlier
The more substantial historical context for the Quranic embryological account is not pre-Islamic Arabic poetry but the medical tradition of Galen of Pergamon, the Greek physician who lived from approximately 129 to 216 CE and whose influence on Islamic medicine was so thoroughly documented that it requires no speculation to establish. Galen’s works were translated into Syriac and then into Arabic in the centuries surrounding and immediately preceding the Islamic revelation, and Galenic medicine constituted the intellectual framework within which virtually every educated physician and natural philosopher in the Near East operated during the period in which the Quran was revealed and compiled.
Galen’s treatise On the Formation of the Foetus and his broader work On the Usefulness of the Parts of the Body contain a detailed account of embryonic development that parallels the Quranic account at almost every significant point. Galen describes the germinal material, the stages of progressive formation, and, most tellingly, a sequence in which the bony structures of the embryo form before the muscular flesh is laid over them. This bones-before-flesh sequence is the detail that advocates of the Quranic miracle most frequently cite as confirmation that the text anticipates modern embryology, because it sounds superficially consistent with what we now know about skeletal and muscular development. The sequence appears explicitly in Galen four centuries before the Quran, however, and it appears there because Galen, working from careful dissection and observation, believed it to be true on the basis of his own theoretical framework about the hierarchy of bodily structures.
Here the historical argument becomes particularly sharp, because Galen’s account of the bones-before-flesh sequence is, in the relevant details, an error. Modern embryology does not describe a clean sequence in which a complete bony skeleton forms and is then clothed in flesh. The actual developmental process is considerably more integrated: mesenchymal cells differentiate into both cartilage and muscle in overlapping and interrelated processes, and the muscular and skeletal systems develop in concert rather than in strict linear sequence. What the Quran describes, and what Galen describes before it, is a schema that reflects ancient observation and ancient theoretical frameworks about the organisation of the body, not the detailed molecular and cellular account that modern developmental biology provides.
If the Quran’s embryological account were miraculous in the sense of encoding knowledge unavailable to its contemporaries, we would expect it to diverge from Galen at precisely the points where Galen was wrong. We would expect a divinely authored text to correct the errors of the best human physician of the ancient world. Instead, we find that the Quran reproduces those errors. The bones-before-flesh schema appears in both texts because both texts reflect the same intellectual tradition, a tradition grounded in observational medicine and theoretical frameworks about bodily organisation that were widespread in the ancient Near East. The Quran does not correct Galen; it follows the same pattern. And a pattern inherited from a human physician is not evidence of divine authorship.
The transmission route for Galenic ideas into seventh-century Arabia is historically well-attested and does not depend on speculation about any individual’s reading habits. The city of Alexandria had been a major centre of medical education for centuries before the Islamic revelation, and Alexandrian medical knowledge circulated throughout the Roman and Byzantine world, reaching the Arabian peninsula through trade networks, through the Jewish and Christian communities resident in Arabia, and through the broader intellectual culture of the ancient Near East. The Prophet Muhammad is reported in various hadith traditions to have had contact with individuals possessing medical knowledge, including figures associated with the Jewish and Christian communities of the Hejaz. Whether or not one accepts those specific accounts, the general point is historically uncontroversial: Galenic medicine was the dominant medical framework of the ancient world in which Islam emerged, and no serious historical scholar disputes that this tradition was available and influential in seventh-century Arabia.
4. What the Verse Conspicuously Omits
Perhaps the most telling deficiency in the Quranic embryological account, and the one that receives the least attention in apologetic presentations, is what it does not say. The miracle claim rests on the argument that the Quran encodes knowledge unavailable to its contemporaries. If that were true, we would expect the text to contain information that no ancient observer could have obtained through ordinary means, information that required the kind of investigative capacity that only modern science has developed.
The single most important discovery in the history of embryology is the discovery of fertilisation: the understanding that a human being begins when a spermatozoon penetrates an ovum and the two sets of genetic material combine to initiate development. This discovery was impossible for ancient observers because the ovum is invisible to the naked eye, the spermatozoon is invisible to the naked eye, and the process of fertilisation occurs inside the body at a cellular scale that requires microscopy to observe. Antonie van Leeuwenhoek first observed spermatozoa in 1677. The human ovum was not described until Karl Ernst von Baer’s work in 1827. The process of fertilisation itself was not properly understood until the late nineteenth century, when Oscar Hertwig’s observations in sea urchins provided the first clear evidence of nuclear fusion between sperm and egg. This is the discovery that required genuine scientific innovation: the invention of the microscope, the development of cell theory, and the patient accumulation of experimental evidence over two centuries.
The Quran does not contain this information. It begins its embryological account not with the fusion of two cells but with the nutfah, the sperm-drop, deposited in a “firm lodging.” This starting point reflects what any ancient observer could see and know: that male seminal fluid was involved in reproduction, that it was deposited internally, and that pregnancy followed. The existence of a female reproductive cell, the mechanism of fertilisation, and the genetic contributions of both parents are entirely absent from the text. These are precisely the things that would have been miraculous to know in the seventh century. These are precisely the things the text does not contain.
Advocates of the miracle claim sometimes respond to this objection by arguing that the word nutfah can be understood to mean a “mixture” or “small quantity of a mixed fluid,” and that this anticipates the understanding that reproduction involves contributions from both male and female. This interpretation is a considerable stretch of the philological evidence. The root meaning of nutfah is a small drop of liquid, and while Arabic is a rich and flexible language, deriving “fertilisation of an ovum by a spermatozoon” from “small drop” requires the kind of creative retrospective interpretation that would allow almost any ancient text to be harmonised with almost any modern discovery. This interpretive approach is sometimes called “reverse engineering,” and it is not a method that would be accepted in any other domain of historical or scientific scholarship. It is applied specifically and selectively to religious texts because the conclusion, miraculous foreknowledge, is desired in advance of the analysis.
The pattern is consistent and revealing across the entire Quranic embryological account. The text contains information that was available to ancient observers through ordinary means. It does not contain information that was unavailable to ancient observers. If a divine author were encoding scientific knowledge for future generations to discover, the obvious strategy would be to include the discoveries that required genuine scientific innovation, the ones that ancient observation could never produce. The absence of precisely that information is not a minor omission in the miracle argument. It is the central datum of the entire analysis, and it points consistently away from the divine hypothesis.
5. The Interpretive Method and Its Problems
Understanding why the miracle claim is so persuasive to so many people requires examining the interpretive method that its advocates use, because the method itself, rather than the evidence, is doing most of the argumentative work. The approach is sometimes called i’jaz literature, from the Arabic for “miraculous inimitability,” and it has a long history in Islamic scholarship, though its application to scientific claims is a relatively modern development that accelerated significantly in the twentieth century, particularly after the Islamic world’s encounter with the prestige of Western science.
The method works as follows. A modern scientific discovery is identified. An Arabic term or passage from the Quran is then selected whose meaning is sufficiently broad or ambiguous that it can be rendered in a way consistent with that discovery. The rendering is presented as the “correct” or “precise” translation of the term. The correspondence between the translated term and the scientific discovery is then cited as evidence of miraculous foreknowledge. At no stage in this process is the method required to engage with alternative translations, with the pre-existing use of the term in non-Quranic contexts, or with the body of ancient medical knowledge that might explain the correspondence without any appeal to the divine.
The problem with this method is not simply that it is unreliable, though it demonstrably is. The deeper problem is that it is unfalsifiable in principle. Any sufficiently large and sufficiently ancient text, interpreted with sufficient flexibility, can be made to yield correspondences with modern knowledge. The Bible has been subjected to the same treatment for centuries. Vedic texts are regularly mined for apparent anticipations of modern physics. Even the works of Nostradamus have been “decoded” to reveal prescience about historical events that occurred after his death. What all these exercises share is the same basic structure: start with the conclusion, work backwards to find the textual support, and treat the support as confirmation. As Clarence Darrow observed, it was precisely when man “doubted the primitive conceptions about religion, and no longer accepted the literal, miraculous teachings of ancient books” that “he set himself to understand nature” properly. The shift from backward-reasoning to evidence-led forward-reasoning is what made genuine scientific knowledge possible, and the i’jaz method is a systematic reversal of that shift.
A useful test of the interpretive method is to apply it to a text known not to be divinely revealed and observe what results. Aristotle’s History of Animals contains descriptions of embryonic development that can be mapped onto modern embryology with roughly the same success rate as the Quranic passages, using a comparably sympathetic reading. Hippocratic texts contain observations about germinal fluid and foetal development that, interpreted generously, can be harmonised with modern knowledge. Galen, as we have seen in detail, describes a developmental sequence that corresponds at multiple points to what modern embryology has established, and whose errors the Quran shares. If the Quranic miracle claim rests on the correspondence between ancient text and modern knowledge, then the same method applied to these non-divine Greek texts should yield equally miraculous results. Advocates of the Quranic miracle claim do not apply their method to Aristotle and Galen, for reasons that are obvious. The failure to do so is not a logical defence of the claim; it is simply a refusal to test the method by applying it consistently across comparable cases.
There is also a selection bias built into the way the miracle claim is constructed. Advocates cite the Quranic passages that correspond most closely with modern embryological knowledge and pass quickly over the passages that do not. The description of human creation from clay, for instance, receives far less attention in the miracle literature than the alaqah and mudghah passages, for the obvious reason that no modern scientific account of human development begins with clay. A genuinely comprehensive comparison between the Quranic embryological account and modern science would need to account for all the passages relevant to the claim, not merely the ones that support it. The selective presentation of supporting evidence while ignoring contrary evidence is not analysis; it is advocacy.
6. The Scholarship That Advocates Do Not Cite
The academic literature on the relationship between Quranic embryology and Galenic medicine is not especially obscure, and it has not been produced primarily by scholars with any animus toward Islam. The transmission of Galenic medicine into Arabic was not a marginal or disputed historical event; it was one of the most consequential intellectual transfers in the history of medicine, and it is thoroughly documented in the primary sources. Scholars of Arabic medicine including Manfred Ullmann and Peter Pormann have produced extensive analyses of the translation movement through which Greek medical knowledge entered the Islamic world, and the picture that emerges is one of systematic, intentional, and highly successful incorporation of Galenic ideas into the emerging Islamic intellectual tradition. Their combined scholarship amounts to a comprehensive historical record that the social-media presentations of the embryology miracle do not acknowledge.
Within the specific context of embryological claims, the most sustained and rigorous critique of the Quranic miracle argument has been produced by Basim Musallam, whose work on sex and society in Islamic history examines in detail the medical knowledge available in the early Islamic period, and by Abul Fadl Mohsin Ebrahim, whose analysis of Islamic bioethics engages carefully with the historical context of Quranic embryological terminology. More recently, popular apologists such as Hamza Tzortzis have defended the miracle claim in widely circulated presentations, while academics in the history of science have responded with detailed rebuttals pointing to the Galenic parallels and the pre-Islamic use of the relevant Arabic terms. The responses are available; they simply receive a fraction of the attention that the original apological presentations command.
The work of the Syrian Islamic scholar Muhammad Shahrour deserves particular mention, because Shahrour represents the tradition of Muslim scholarship that takes historical and textual criticism seriously and does not regard the miracle claim as either necessary or well-founded. Shahrour argues that attempts to read modern science into Quranic texts distort both the science and the text, and that they represent a form of intellectual defensiveness that ultimately weakens rather than strengthens Muslim engagement with the modern world. This is not a minority position among Muslim intellectuals who work within academic frameworks; it is a substantial and serious tradition of internal criticism that the social-media presentations of the miracle claim consistently suppress in favour of the more immediately gratifying apologetic narrative.
The advocates of the embryological miracle claim tend to cite Keith Moore’s collaboration with Saudi scholars in the 1980s while omitting the significant context of how and why that endorsement was produced. Moore’s involvement occurred during a period of considerable Saudi institutional investment in the promotion of Islamic scientific credentials internationally. The context of that collaboration is not a conspiracy theory; it is simply a relevant fact about how the endorsement was generated and how it should therefore be weighted. A sponsored academic collaboration whose conclusions align with the interests of its sponsors does not constitute independent scientific verification of the Quranic account, any more than a commercially sponsored study constitutes independent verification of a product’s efficacy. The claim deserves to be evaluated on the historical and philological evidence, not on the authority of a single anatomist working in a specific institutional context.
7. What a Genuine Scientific Miracle Would Look Like
It is worth being precise about what the miracle claim requires and what evidence would genuinely support it, because a charge of evidential failure can only be made to stick if there is a clear standard against which the claim is being judged. A genuine textual scientific miracle, in the sense that the advocates of the Quranic claim intend, would need to satisfy certain conditions that the embryological passages demonstrably do not satisfy. First, the information encoded in the text would need to be genuinely unavailable through the observational and intellectual resources of its time and place. The Quranic embryological vocabulary was available in pre-Islamic Arabic, and the conceptual framework closely mirrors Galenic medicine, which was the dominant medical tradition of the ancient world in which Islam emerged. The first condition is not met by the text as it stands.
Second, the information would need to be specific enough that it could not be explained by coincidence, broad metaphor, or creative retrospective interpretation. The miracle claim depends heavily on flexible translation of Arabic terms whose primary meanings are observationally accessible, and the interpretive method used would yield comparable “miraculous” correspondences in Aristotle, Galen, and Hippocrates if applied consistently. The specificity requirement is not met.
Third, and most importantly, a genuinely miraculous text would be expected to contain information that requires precisely the kind of investigative capacity that its authors could not have possessed: information about fertilisation, about the genetic contributions of the ovum, about chromosomal inheritance, about the molecular signalling cascades that govern embryonic development. The Quran contains none of this information. It contains instead the information that careful observation of miscarried embryos, combined with the theoretical frameworks of ancient medicine, would readily produce. A text that contains only what ancient observers could know, described in terms that ancient observers used, and structured according to a framework that ancient physicians developed, is a historical document, not a miraculous one.
None of this analysis should be taken as a dismissal of the Quran’s literary, spiritual, or historical significance. A text can be important, influential, and genuinely meaningful to billions of people without also encoding miraculous foreknowledge of modern science. The attempt to make that additional claim, however, is not merely unnecessary; it is counterproductive, because it rests the credibility of the faith on an empirical claim that does not hold. When young Muslims who have been raised on the embryology miracle encounter the Galenic parallels in a university course on the history of medicine, the result is not a strengthened faith. It is a damaged one, because they have been taught to rely on evidence that turns out to be fully explicable without any divine hypothesis.
8. The Sociology of a Circulating Claim
Understanding why this particular claim has such remarkable durability and such reach on social media requires attending not just to its content but to its social function. The embryology miracle claim does several things simultaneously that make it extremely valuable within Muslim apologetic discourse and extremely resistant to refutation in the format in which it is typically presented.
It provides a sense of intellectual dignity to communities that feel under cultural pressure from scientific modernity. The claim says, in effect: science confirms what our scripture stated fourteen centuries ago. This is a powerful reassurance in a context where the prestige of scientific knowledge is high and where traditional religious claims are frequently challenged on empirical grounds. The claim does not ask believers to retreat from science; it asks them to see science as vindicating their tradition. That is a far more appealing position than defensive resistance, and it is entirely understandable that communities under intellectual pressure would find it attractive. The appeal is genuinely human, even if the argument is historically false.
The claim also travels well in the short-form format precisely because the debunking requires context that the format cannot easily carry. A fifteen-second video can assert the miracle. A serious response to the assertion requires explaining Galenic medicine, the translation movement, the history of Arabic lexicography, the development of modern embryology, and the standards of evidence appropriate to miracle claims. That response cannot be made in fifteen seconds. The asymmetry between assertion and refutation is a structural feature of the medium, not a reflection of the relative strength of the competing positions, and advocates of the miracle claim have proved adept at exploiting it. The format rewards the claimant and penalises the critic, regardless of where the evidence actually lies.
There is also a community-reinforcement dynamic at work that makes the claim resistant to refutation even when the refutation is encountered. Within tightly knit Muslim social-media communities, the embryology claim tends to be treated as established, and its refutation tends to be framed as motivated by anti-Islamic prejudice rather than by evidence. This framing makes it psychologically difficult for community members to engage seriously with the debunking arguments, because doing so risks social censure within their own networks. The claim functions, in this respect, less as an argument and more as a social marker: a token of belonging and orthodoxy whose evidential content is secondary to its communal function. Recognising this dynamic is not an insult to any individual who holds the belief; it is an accurate description of how tribal epistemology operates in all communities, religious and secular alike, whenever a claim becomes entangled with group identity.

The pre-Islamic use of the relevant Arabic terms can be verified in classical Arabic lexicography and literary analysis. The comparison between the Quranic developmental sequence and Galen’s account can be made directly by anyone willing to read both texts in translation. The miracle claim does not survive this examination. It survives only in the absence of it, which is precisely why the short-form social-media format is so well suited to its propagation and so poorly suited to its refutation.
9. The Deeper Question the Claim Obscures
There is a more important question underneath the embryology debate, and it is one that the miracle claim, if accepted uncritically, tends to foreclose: the question of how religious knowledge claims should be evaluated. The strategy of seeking scientific validation for religious texts is, in one sense, an implicit concession to the authority of science. It accepts that scientific evidence is the appropriate standard by which to evaluate claims about the natural world, and it then attempts to show that the religious text meets that standard. This strategy carries a risk that its advocates consistently underestimate: if the religious text is to be judged by scientific standards, it must be judged by scientific standards consistently, which means that the same rigorous, disinterested analysis that science applies to any empirical claim must be applied to the textual claim as well.

The miracle claim appears to offer such a resource: it says that modern science and ancient revelation are not in tension but in confirmation, and that the apparent opposition between reason and faith dissolves once the correct reading of the text is applied.
The difficulty, and it is a genuine one for those who care about the long-term intellectual health of Muslim communities, is that the resource is a false one. A faith built on the embryology miracle is a faith built on a historical claim that does not withstand examination, and when that claim is exposed, the damage is not merely to the specific argument but to the broader sense that the tradition has been honest with its adherents. This is not a hostile conclusion. It is an accurate one, and accuracy about historical evidence is the minimum standard that any serious claim to miraculous foreknowledge must meet.

They are better served by the kind of intellectually rigorous engagement with their tradition that a growing number of Muslim scholars are themselves calling for, one that does not require ancient texts to anticipate modern science in order for them to carry meaning and authority in the domains where they genuinely speak. The history of embryology is not an attack on anyone’s faith. It is an invitation to examine the evidence with the same care and the same commitment to truth that the best traditions of both scientific and religious scholarship have always demanded of those who take ideas seriously.
Galen wrote the sequence down in the second century. He got some of it wrong because he was working at the edge of what naked-eye observation could reveal.
