The Double Claim
There is a particular kind of argument that only works if the person making it hopes you will not look at both halves simultaneously. Creationism, in its contemporary form, has become a sustained exercise in precisely that hope. The movement no longer presents itself as a straightforward rejection of science. It has learned that outright rejection is politically costly and rhetorically unpersuasive. Instead, it has adopted two distinct lines of attack that it deploys in rotation, sometimes within the same publication, occasionally within the same paragraph, almost never with any acknowledgement that they are mutually incompatible.
The first line is one of validation. On this account, science and scripture are not at war; they are converging. The cosmic microwave background radiation, we are told, confirms the cosmological framework of Genesis. The fine-tuning arguments drawn from physics are said to establish that the universe was designed with intent. Every new discovery in astrophysics, molecular biology, or information theory is announced, in certain publications and on certain websites, as further verification of what the biblical text already said. Science, on this reading, is a reliable and authoritative method for investigating reality, and its conclusions, at least the ones that can be made to rhyme with scripture, are to be welcomed and celebrated.
The second line is one of conspiracy. On this account, the scientific establishment is corrupt. Mainstream palaeontology, geology, evolutionary biology, and cosmological dating are not neutral investigations of evidence but ideologically motivated exercises in the suppression of inconvenient truth. The consensus on the age of the Earth, roughly 4.5 billion years, is manufactured by a scientific community that has foreclosed the creationist alternative not because the evidence is against it but because of philosophical prejudice, institutional gatekeeping, and a prior commitment to materialism. The fossil record is misleading. Radiometric dating is built on assumptions that beg the question. The universities are not to be trusted.
The problem is elementary, and it is worth stating plainly before proceeding to any further analysis. These two positions cannot both be true. The first requires science to be a reliable guide to reality whose conclusions carry genuine epistemic authority. The second requires science to be an untrustworthy enterprise whose consensus reflects bias rather than evidence. The movement switches between them according to which serves the conclusion it has already reached, and that switching is not a minor inconsistency at the margins of an otherwise coherent position. It is the load-bearing structure of the entire enterprise.
This essay names that incoherence, traces how it operates in practice, examines why the more obviously absurd claims survive refutation so stubbornly, and asks what it tells us about the relationship between religious identity and scientific authority. The analysis is intended seriously. Creationism is not a movement of unintelligent people, and treating it as one would be both factually wrong and analytically lazy. It is, however, a movement that has built its public strategy on a logical contradiction, and that contradiction is worth examining with some care.
1. The Validation Tactic: When Science Becomes Scripture’s Ally
The claim that modern science confirms biblical cosmology has a long history, and it is not entirely without precedent in the behaviour of actual scientists. In the 1920s and 1930s, when Georges LemaƮtre first proposed what became the Big Bang model, several commentators noted with some excitement that a universe with a definite beginning sounded rather more like Genesis than the static, eternal universe that had been the default assumption. Pope Pius XII declared in 1951 that the new cosmology provided scientific support for the idea of creation. This was, to put it mildly, an overstatement, but it established a template that creationist literature has been exploiting ever since.
The cosmic microwave background is the current flagship of this effort. Discovered in 1965 by Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson, the CMB is the thermal radiation left over from the early universe, and its existence is one of the strongest pieces of evidence for the Big Bang model. Creationist literature regularly presents this as confirmation of Genesis: the universe had a beginning, Genesis says the universe had a beginning, therefore Genesis is confirmed. The argument is presented with considerable confidence, and it is worth understanding exactly why it fails.
The Big Bang model does not describe a creation event in any theologically useful sense. It describes an early state of the universe characterised by extreme density and temperature, from which the observable universe evolved according to well-understood physical laws. It does not imply a creator, a purpose, a six-day timeline, a flat earth surrounded by a firmament, the separation of waters above and below, or any of the other specific claims made in the Genesis text. The claim that the CMB confirms Genesis is the equivalent of noting that both your diary and a Shakespeare sonnet contain the word “morning” and concluding that Shakespeare was writing about your breakfast. The surface similarity does not constitute confirmation; it constitutes pattern-matching applied without any rigour to two things that are not actually describing the same phenomenon.
Stephen Jay Gould identified this pattern of reasoning with characteristic directness. Writing about astronomers who had attempted to read the Big Bang as the cosmological equivalent of Genesis, Gould observed: “I confess that I have found it hard to take this argument seriously.” The reason it is hard to take seriously is not that the Big Bang is uninteresting or that cosmological origins are without philosophical significance. It is that the move from “the universe had a beginning” to “therefore Genesis is accurate” skips over an enormous number of steps, each of which requires independent evidence that is simply not provided. The Big Bang gives you a hot, dense early universe governed by physical law. It does not give you a personal deity, a six-day schedule, a garden in Mesopotamia, or a talking serpent. The distance between those two things is not a footnote; it is the entire argument.
Fine-tuning arguments operate similarly. The observation that the fundamental constants of physics appear to fall within narrow ranges compatible with the existence of complex matter, stars, planets, and life is a genuine and interesting feature of the universe that physicists take seriously. But the inference from “the constants are finely tuned” to “a biblical god set them deliberately” is not a scientific conclusion. It is a philosophical move that science itself neither supports nor rules out, and it certainly does not bridge the gap between the abstract notion of a designer and the specific claims of any particular religious text. The validation tactic works by borrowing the authority of genuine science and quietly transferring it to claims that science has not actually endorsed.
It is also worth noting that the same scientific framework the validation tactic is borrowing from is the one that establishes an age for the universe of approximately 13.8 billion years, an age for the Earth of approximately 4.5 billion years, and a timeline for the development of life stretching across hundreds of millions of years. The creationist who cites the Big Bang as confirmation of Genesis and then insists the Earth is six thousand years old has not merely made an error in arithmetic. They have cited the authority of a scientific framework at precisely the moment that framework is consistent with their preferred conclusion, and then abandoned that framework at precisely the moment it contradicts their preferred conclusion. This is not an engagement with science. It is a selective raid on science’s credibility, conducted with no acknowledgement that the raider is helping themselves to the parts they like while setting fire to the rest of the warehouse.
The dishonesty of this procedure is not a matter of imputed motive. It is a matter of logical structure. If the methods of modern cosmology are reliable enough to establish that the universe had a beginning, which is the finding the validation tactic borrows, then those same methods are reliable enough to establish the timeline and physical character of that beginning, which is the finding the conspiracy tactic must reject. You cannot selectively trust an instrument. A thermometer that is accurate at one temperature is accurate at all temperatures, or it is not a reliable thermometer. The creationist argument requires a scientific instrument that is reliable only when it produces readings compatible with a prior theological commitment. No such instrument exists, and no such instrument could exist, because reliability is not a property that can be switched on and off by the preference of the person reading the dial.
2. The Conspiracy Tactic: When Science Becomes the Enemy
The second tactic is the mirror image of the first. Where the validation tactic borrows science’s authority, the conspiracy tactic dissolves it. The argument here is that mainstream science, particularly in fields like evolutionary biology, palaeontology, and geochronology, is not a neutral investigation of evidence but an ideologically captured enterprise committed in advance to materialist conclusions. The scientists who populate these fields are not following the evidence; they are suppressing alternatives, gatekeeping journals, and enforcing a consensus that owes more to philosophical prejudice than to actual data.
This argument is advanced with varying degrees of sophistication. At its most polished, it appears in the work of Intelligent Design proponents like Michael Behe and Stephen Meyer, who argue that the scientific establishment’s refusal to consider design inferences within biology reflects a prior methodological commitment to naturalism rather than any evidential deficiency in the design hypothesis itself. At its least polished, it appears in the suggestion that palaeontologists have fabricated transitional fossils, that geologists are using circular reasoning when they apply radiometric dating, and that the entire apparatus of modern Earth science is built on assumptions smuggled in to serve a secular worldview.
The flagship exhibit of the conspiracy tactic is the claim that humans and non-avian dinosaurs coexisted within recorded or near-recorded history. This claim appears in various forms: in the assertion that the biblical Behemoth or Leviathan are descriptions of dinosaurs, in the insistence that petroglyphs exist depicting creatures that resemble sauropods, in the suggestion that folk memories of dragons are corrupted accounts of actual encounters with living dinosaurs. The Answers in Genesis organisation, the Creation Museum in Kentucky, and the associated Ark Encounter exhibit present human-dinosaur coexistence as established fact, with model displays showing children apparently at ease near Triceratops and other large archosaurs.
The scientific case against human-dinosaur coexistence is not merely strong; it is overwhelming and comes from multiple independent lines of evidence. The geological record places non-avian dinosaur fossils in strata that are, by every dating method we possess, tens of millions of years old. No human remains or human artefacts have ever been found in dinosaur-bearing rock. The molecular clocks derived from comparative genomics are consistent with this timeline. The biomechanical analysis of dinosaur physiology places them firmly in a world climatically and ecologically unlike the present. There is no credible, peer-reviewed, independently replicated evidence of any kind that places a living non-avian dinosaur in contact with a hominid of any species. The convergence of geology, palaeontology, molecular biology, and physics on this conclusion is not the product of a conspiracy. It is what the evidence looks like when multiple independent methods produce the same result.
But the conspiracy tactic does not engage with this convergence of evidence. It cannot, because the only way to sustain the coexistence claim is to discredit all of the methods that contradict it simultaneously. Radiometric dating must be unreliable, its results dismissed as circular. The geological column must rest on false assumptions. Fossil interpretation must involve motivated error. The peer review process must function as a mechanism for suppressing dissent rather than evaluating evidence. Every field of science that returns a result inconsistent with a young Earth and human-dinosaur coexistence must be folded into the conspiracy. The conspiracy, in other words, must be total, covering physics, chemistry, geology, biology, genetics, and palaeontology, because all of these fields independently return the same conclusions that the young-Earth position requires us to reject.
Consider what that actually requires one to believe. Radiometric dating relies on the known decay rates of radioactive isotopes, rates that have been measured with extreme precision in laboratory conditions and that are consequences of the fundamental constants of quantum mechanics. To argue that radiometric dating is unreliable is to argue that the nuclear physics underlying it is unreliable, which is the same nuclear physics that underlies, among other things, the design of medical imaging equipment, the operation of nuclear power stations, and the construction of weapons whose functioning has been empirically verified. The conspiracy, if we follow it to its logical terminus, must include not just palaeontologists but nuclear physicists, medical physicists, engineers, and the entire body of technology that depends on the accuracy of nuclear decay rates. At some point the claim ceases to be a critique of scientific methodology and becomes a wholesale rejection of empirical investigation as such, which is precisely the position the validation tactic was simultaneously trying to avoid.
The internal tension here is not a philosophical subtlety. It is a flat contradiction. If the nuclear physics underlying radiometric dating is unreliable, then the nuclear physics underlying the cosmic microwave background measurements is unreliable too, since both fields draw on the same body of quantum mechanical theory. The creationist cannot rescue the CMB by embracing the physics of photon decoupling in the early universe while simultaneously rejecting the physics of radioactive decay. The two sets of phenomena are governed by the same theoretical framework. To accept one application and reject the other is not a principled methodological position. It is a conclusion-driven selection that has nothing to do with the reliability of the underlying physics and everything to do with which conclusions the underlying physics produces in each case.
3. The Logical Structure of the Contradiction
The contradiction between these two tactics is not accidental. It is structural, and it mirrors a problem that appears at a smaller scale in a specific creationist argument that this site has examined elsewhere. The “were you there?” gambit, discussed in detail at the full analysis of creationist debate tactics, applies a selective standard of historical verification that would, if consistently applied, demolish not just evolutionary biology but all of forensic science, cosmology, archaeology, and historiography. The creationist who asks “were you there?” when a palaeontologist describes Cretaceous ecosystems does not ask “were you there?” when a physicist describes the early universe in terms that can be made to rhyme with Genesis. The standard is applied selectively, and the selection is determined entirely by whether the conclusion supports or challenges the preferred position.
The double tactic operates at a movement-wide scale using precisely the same logical structure. Science is authoritative when it appears to confirm Genesis. Science is corrupt when it contradicts Genesis. The common factor is not any feature of the scientific methodology being evaluated; it is the relationship between the conclusion and the predetermined position. This is, in the most straightforward sense, motivated reasoning: the conclusion is fixed, and the methodology is evaluated retrospectively according to whether it supports the conclusion. Most human beings engage in motivated reasoning to some degree. The distinctive feature of the creationist movement is that it has institutionalised motivated reasoning, given it a research programme, built museums around it, and taught it to children as though it were a form of intellectual rigour.
Philosophers of science have a name for problems broadly adjacent to this, though the creationist version goes considerably further than the academic debate. The demarcation problem, the question of what distinguishes science from non-science, is a genuine and unresolved philosophical puzzle, and there are serious arguments about whether the criterion of falsifiability proposed by Karl Popper is fully adequate, whether Lakatos’s notion of research programmes offers a better framework, and what role paradigm shifts of the kind described by Thomas Kuhn play in the development of scientific knowledge. Creationism borrows the vocabulary of these debates, particularly the Kuhnian language of paradigms and the Lakatosian language of progressive and degenerative research programmes, to argue that it represents a genuine scientific alternative that the establishment has unfairly excluded.
But borrowing the vocabulary of the philosophy of science is not the same thing as doing science. The philosophy of science debates are about the precise characterisation of an enormously successful method for investigating reality, a method whose reliability is demonstrated by the technology that emerges from it. They are not a general licence to reject any scientific consensus that conflicts with a prior belief. The Intelligent Design movement’s use of Kuhn’s notion of paradigm shift, for instance, systematically misrepresents what Kuhn was describing. Kuhn was analysing the history of transitions between scientific frameworks, each of which was more successful at explaining evidence than the last. He was not providing a justification for abandoning a framework that is working and replacing it with one that has not produced a single novel, independently verified prediction. The creationist who invokes Kuhn to justify rejecting evolutionary biology has not understood Kuhn. They have found a legitimate intellectual vocabulary and are using it in a way that is neither legitimate nor, on examination, coherent.
Isaac Asimov, who spent much of his career making the methods and findings of science accessible to a general audience, identified something important about the asymmetry between scripture and scientific inquiry when he wrote: “The Bible and science agree in being unable to say anything certainly about what happened before the beginning. There is this difference. The Bible will never be able to tell us. It has reached its final form, and it simply doesn’t say. Science, on the other hand, is still developing, and the time may come when it can answer questions that, at present, it cannot.” The distinction Asimov draws is not merely about content but about method. Science is open to revision in the light of new evidence, which is precisely why it has been able to develop and deepen its account of reality over time. Scripture is not open to revision, which is why the creationist is forced into the contortion of claiming that science confirms it when it appears to and that science is corrupt when it does not. An account that cannot be revised in the light of evidence is not in dialogue with science at all; it is asking science to serve as its mirror, reflecting only what has already been decided.
The asymmetry Asimov identified has a further implication that the creationist literature does not acknowledge. Because science is self-correcting, its conclusions carry a kind of authority that only self-correcting methods can earn: the authority of having survived testing. The age of the Earth is not 4.54 billion years because geologists decided that figure would be convenient. It is 4.54 billion years because every independent method that has been applied to the question has returned a result consistent with that figure, and because the methods that returned results inconsistent with it were subsequently found to contain errors that, when corrected, brought their results into line. That process of correction and convergence is the source of the conclusion’s authority, and it is a source that a fixed, non-revisable text can never replicate.
4. Why the Absurd Claims Survive Refutation
The human-dinosaur coexistence claim is, by any ordinary measure of epistemic plausibility, a spectacular failure. It is contradicted by the entire weight of evidence from multiple independent scientific disciplines. It has been examined and rejected by every credentialled scientist working in the relevant fields. It is, in the literal sense, a source of bewilderment to the scientific community. And yet it persists, is actively promoted, has been enshrined in museums that attract millions of visitors, and appears to be believed with complete sincerity by a very large number of people. The straightforward refutation of a claim, however thorough, does not cause it to disappear. The question worth asking is why not.
The answer is not, or not primarily, that the people holding the claim are incapable of understanding the evidence. Many of them are entirely capable of understanding the evidence, and some of them, particularly in the Intelligent Design wing of the movement, are trained scientists who genuinely know the fields they are engaging with. The answer has to do with what the claim is doing within the community that holds it, and this is a rather more interesting analysis than a simple narrative of ignorance and enlightenment would suggest.
In the sociology of belief, there is a well-documented phenomenon associated with costly signalling: the idea that a signal is credible precisely because it is expensive to produce. In evolutionary biology, the classic example is the peacock’s tail, which is so metabolically costly that only a genuinely healthy animal can afford to grow one, making it a reliable signal of underlying fitness. The same logic applies, in a different register, to belief systems. A belief that is costly to hold, in the sense that it invites ridicule from the outside world, requires active effort to maintain in the face of contrary evidence, and marks the holder as distinct from the mainstream, functions as a reliable signal of in-group membership precisely because of those costs. It is not despite the absurdity that the belief performs its social function; it is partly because of it.
The human-dinosaur coexistence claim is, from this perspective, not a liability for the creationist community but a feature of it. To believe it publicly, in the face of near-universal scientific rejection and considerable social ridicule from outside the community, is to demonstrate a level of commitment that a less expensive belief could not demonstrate. The refutation of the claim does not undermine its social function; it can actually reinforce it. Every time a scientist or a secularist points out that the claim is absurd and that the evidence against it is overwhelming, the community can respond by noting that this is exactly what the corrupt establishment would say, and that the willingness to maintain the belief under social pressure is itself a mark of genuine faith and genuine intellectual courage, as the community defines those things.
This dynamic has been studied extensively in the context of apocalyptic belief, where the failure of a predicted end date tends to strengthen rather than weaken the commitment of core believers, a phenomenon first described in detail by Leon Festinger, Henry Riecken, and Stanley Schachter in their 1956 study “When Prophecy Fails.” The same structure appears in the context of conspiracy theories more broadly, where the absence of evidence for the conspiracy is interpreted as evidence of how effectively it has been concealed, and where external criticism is processed as confirmation that the critic is either a dupe or an agent of the conspiracy. The creationist use of the scientific conspiracy framing connects directly to this structure: the more forcefully the scientific community rejects a claim, the more that rejection can be presented as evidence of the conspiracy’s reach. Refutation, in this framework, is not a problem to be answered but a confirmation to be welcomed.
The claim that survives refutation most easily is therefore not the most plausible claim but the most symbolically loaded one. The human-dinosaur exhibit at the Creation Museum is not primarily an attempt to persuade secular scientists or neutral observers. It is primarily an act of community definition: this is what we believe, this is what makes us distinct from the secular world, and our willingness to believe it publicly is a declaration of loyalty. Engaging with it at the level of evidence misses what it is actually doing. It is not functioning as an empirical claim in the ordinary sense. It is performing a cultural identity, and that performance has a logic of its own that is largely immune to refutation precisely because refutation is not the context in which the claim operates.
This does not mean the claim is harmless. The same community whose identity is being defined by these beliefs also exercises significant political influence over science education in a number of countries, most notably the United States. The cultural performance has real-world consequences for what is taught in publicly funded schools, what is funded in research, and how the political relationship between religious institutions and scientific ones is navigated. Understanding that the absurd claims are functioning as identity markers rather than purely as empirical propositions is analytically important, but it is not a reason to treat them as politically irrelevant or to refrain from making the argument against them as clearly as possible.
5. The Myth of “Kinds” and the Selective Use of Biology
The double tactic is visible with particular clarity in the creationist treatment of biological variation. The concept of “kinds,” drawn from the Genesis account in which God creates animals “after their kind,” is used to construct a framework that accommodates some biological change while rejecting the full implications of evolutionary theory. Within a “kind,” variation is permitted. Wolves and dogs and coyotes can share a common ancestor because they are all members of the same created kind. But the boundaries between kinds are treated as fixed: a wolf kind cannot be ancestrally related to a cat kind, and neither can be ancestrally related to a fish kind.
The problem is that this framework has no independent biological basis and no predictive power. The definition of a “kind” in creationist literature shifts according to what is needed for the argument. When creationists want to explain how Noah’s ark could have housed all species, kinds are defined very broadly: all felids descended from a single pair, all canids from a single pair, allowing for rapid diversification after the flood through what creationists call “microevolution.” When creationists want to argue against common ancestry across broader groups, kinds are defined more narrowly, and the boundaries become exactly the points where evolutionary inference is most inconvenient. The term is being used to do two contradictory jobs simultaneously, and no methodological principle is offered for determining where a kind begins and ends, other than “wherever is convenient for the conclusion at hand.”
More fundamentally, the rapid post-flood diversification that young-Earth creationism requires is, on any honest analysis, more extreme than the evolutionary change that the movement objects to. If two felid ancestors on the ark gave rise to all extant felid species in the roughly four thousand years since the flood, that represents a rate of speciation and morphological change that makes standard evolutionary timescales look leisurely by comparison. The genetic mutations required to produce that diversification in that timeframe, and the selective pressures required to fix them in populations, would constitute what population geneticists would recognise as extraordinarily rapid evolution. Creationists have adopted the very mechanism they reject, turbocharged it to an implausible rate, and applied it to the one period of history they wish to protect from scientific scrutiny. The detailed case against the “kinds” framework is developed further at the full analysis of the kinds argument, but the logical structure of the problem is visible from the outside: scientific mechanisms are borrowed when they serve the narrative and rejected when they do not. The pattern is the same pattern. It carries the same name.
There is also a deeper problem with the kinds framework that the creationist literature tends not to confront directly. If biological variation within a kind can produce, in a few thousand years, the entire diversity of extant felids from a single ancestor pair, then the distinction between what creationists call “microevolution” and what they call “macroevolution” dissolves. The production of new species, new body plans, and new ecological niches from a single ancestral population over thousands of generations is exactly what evolutionary theory predicts and describes. Creationists have, in effect, adopted a version of evolution that they apply selectively to the period after Noah’s flood while denying the principle of common descent across deeper time. This selective application has no principled basis. If the mechanism works for four thousand years of post-flood diversification, there is no scientific reason it could not work for four hundred million years of deeper biological history, which is precisely what the evolutionary account requires.
6. Pseudo-Science and the Pretence of Method
One of the more sophisticated moves in contemporary creationism is the adoption of the vocabulary and some of the surface appearance of scientific method. Academic-style journals are published with abstracts and reference lists. Conferences with earnest-sounding names are convened and their proceedings circulated. Papers are formatted to resemble peer-reviewed output. Doctoral credentials are prominently cited, whether or not those credentials are in the relevant field. The Discovery Institute, the primary institutional home of Intelligent Design in the United States, employs a number of researchers with genuine scientific credentials in various disciplines, and its publications are formatted to look like serious academic output.
But the adoption of scientific vocabulary and the appearance of scientific method are not the same thing as doing science, and the distinction matters considerably. Science is defined not by its formatting conventions or its institutional affiliations but by its commitment to a specific epistemological procedure: hypotheses are proposed, their implications are derived, predictions are made, those predictions are tested against independent evidence, and the hypotheses are revised or abandoned in the light of the results. The process is self-correcting because any hypothesis that fails the test is discarded, however inconvenient that may be for the people who proposed it and however much institutional prestige they have invested in it.
Intelligent Design and young-Earth creationism do not operate this way. The core conclusions, that the universe is the product of a designing intelligence, that the Earth is approximately six thousand years old, that human beings did not share a common ancestor with other primates, are fixed in advance and are not subject to revision in the light of evidence. The research programme, such as it is, is devoted to finding evidence that appears to support those conclusions and to undermining the credibility of evidence that contradicts them. This is the reverse of scientific method. In genuine scientific method, the evidence determines the conclusion. In creationist research, the conclusion determines which evidence is acceptable and which must be explained away as the product of bias or conspiracy.

The specific point here is that the adoption of scientific formatting by creationist institutions is itself a version of the validation tactic: science’s authority is being borrowed, in the form of its institutional trappings, at precisely the moment that its methods and conclusions are being abandoned. The two moves are inseparable, and they are inseparable because the authority being borrowed would not be available if the abandonment of method were more transparent. The laboratory coat is being worn by someone who has no intention of following where the experiment leads.
It is also worth attending to what the creationist research programme has actually produced over the decades since it was formally institutionalised. Intelligent Design, proposed as a scientific alternative to evolutionary biology, has generated no novel, testable, independently verified predictions. It has proposed no mechanism for design that can be investigated empirically. It has not identified a single phenomenon for which “design” is a more predictively accurate explanation than the evolutionary or physical explanation it proposes to replace. The argument from irreducible complexity, which claims that certain biological structures are too complex to have evolved incrementally because the removal of any one component would render them non-functional, has been examined in detail by biologists and found to rest on a false premise: the precursor components of allegedly irreducibly complex systems have been identified, and the evolutionary pathways for their development have been described with considerable precision. The blood-clotting cascade and the bacterial flagellum, the two flagship examples of irreducible complexity advanced by Michael Behe, are demonstrably not irreducibly complex. The claim has been answered by the evidence, and it has not been revised in the light of that answer. A research programme that cannot revise its conclusions in the light of refuting evidence is not a scientific research programme. It is a theology wearing a laboratory coat, and the coat does not change what is underneath.
7. The Age of the Earth and the Evidence That Is Not in Dispute
Young-Earth creationism requires the Earth to be approximately six to ten thousand years old. This figure is derived from the genealogies in the biblical text, added up by scholars like James Ussher in the seventeenth century to produce a creation date of 4004 BCE. The scientific consensus, derived from radiometric dating of rocks and meteorites, from the physics of stellar evolution, and from multiple independent lines of evidence, places the age of the Earth at approximately 4.54 billion years. The age of the universe, derived from measurements of the cosmic microwave background, the expansion rate of the universe, and the physics of stellar populations, is approximately 13.8 billion years. The discrepancy between the biblical chronology and the scientific one is not a matter of a few percentage points. It is a factor of roughly 750,000, and that figure is not the product of a single method that might be challenged. It is the product of many independent methods that consistently agree with one another.
The evidence for these timescales is not confined to one field or one method, and this is precisely why the conspiracy tactic must be so totalising to sustain the young-Earth position. Radiometric dating, which measures the decay of radioactive isotopes, has been cross-validated against multiple independent methods: the layering of ice cores in Antarctica and Greenland, which preserve annual records stretching back hundreds of thousands of years; the annual layering of sedimentary deposits known as varves; the known distances to astronomical objects whose light is still reaching us and whose travel time therefore encodes their age; the stellar evolution of stars whose physical behaviour is described by well-understood nuclear physics; the molecular clock method in genetics, which measures the accumulation of mutations in DNA over time at rates calibrated against both fossil evidence and known geological events; and the independent dating of geological strata by multiple methods that consistently agree with one another. As the evidence is laid out carefully at the full scientific account of the Earth’s age, this convergence of independent methods on the same answer is precisely what reliable scientific consensus looks like.
Young-Earth creationism must reject all of these methods simultaneously, and this is the point at which the internal incoherence of the double tactic becomes most acute. If only one method were being rejected, it might be possible to construct a specific and focused methodological critique of that method. But to reject radiometric dating, ice core records, varve chronology, stellar physics, genetic molecular clocks, and the independent consistency of geological strata all at once requires a claim that an enormous body of scientific work, produced by researchers in multiple countries, multiple institutions, and multiple disciplines, over more than a century, is wrong in a way that consistently and coincidentally supports the old-Earth conclusion. The probability of that degree of independent error all pointing in the same direction, if the errors were genuine and random, is vanishingly small. The only alternative is that the errors are not random but coordinated, which is the conspiracy claim in its starkest form. And the validation tactic of borrowing cosmological authority requires that same conspiracy to somehow not extend to the specific findings in cosmology that are being borrowed. The movement is simultaneously claiming that cosmologists are trustworthy enough to confirm Genesis and untrustworthy enough to have fabricated 13.8 billion years of universal history. Both claims cannot be true, and the movement never explains how it decides which cosmologists to trust on which days.
8. The Intellectual Tradition the Movement Is Abandoning
It is worth pausing to note that the relationship between religious thought and natural philosophy has not always been one of simple opposition, and that the current creationist strategy represents not a defence of tradition but an abandonment of one of the more intellectually serious aspects of it. Augustine of Hippo, writing in the fifth century, explicitly warned against Christians making confident claims about the natural world on the basis of scripture, arguing that to do so risked bringing the faith into disrepute when those claims were shown to be wrong by people with actual knowledge of the relevant subjects. His concern was not with science as such, which did not exist in its modern form, but with the principle that the interpretation of scripture should not require the rejection of what can be known by reason and observation. Thomas Aquinas drew a careful distinction between what could be known by reason and what required revelation, a distinction that implied a sphere of natural knowledge operating by its own rules and producing its own legitimate conclusions.
The medieval Islamic philosophical tradition, from which a great deal of the Greek scientific and philosophical inheritance was transmitted to Europe, combined rigorous natural inquiry with theological commitment in ways that did not require the inquiry to produce predetermined conclusions. Scholars like Ibn Rushd, al-Biruni, and Ibn al-Haytham conducted empirical investigations of the natural world without treating those investigations as threats to religious belief, and the tradition of rational theology in Islam produced some of the most sophisticated philosophical arguments about the relationship between reason and revelation that the medieval world generated. None of this is an endorsement of the theological positions those thinkers held. It is simply an observation that the insistence on treating every scientific finding as either a confirmation of a specific scriptural claim or a product of conspiracy is not a timeless feature of religious intellectual life. It is a recent innovation with a specific history.
The claim that every finding of modern science must either be recruited to the defence of a specific reading of a specific religious text or else denounced as the product of ideological corruption is not a defence of religious tradition. It is a particular late-twentieth-century American innovation, driven by specific political circumstances: the response to the 1925 Scopes trial and its aftermath, the growing influence of fundamentalist publishing networks in the mid-century, and the work of Henry Morris and John Whitcomb, whose 1961 book “The Genesis Flood” established the modern young-Earth creationist framework as an organised movement rather than a scattered cultural tendency. The tradition that this movement claims to be defending is considerably more intellectually various than its contemporary representatives suggest, and some of the most rigorous theological thinkers in history would have found the current creationist strategy epistemologically embarrassing rather than admirable. Augustine said so explicitly, and he said so fifteen centuries before the Discovery Institute was founded.
This observation is not made in defence of religion but in the interest of accuracy. If creationism is going to be criticised, it should be criticised for what it actually is: a recent, politically shaped, and intellectually incoherent movement, not a timeless feature of religious thought. It is, in a certain sense, a worse thing than a timeless feature of religious thought, because it represents a deliberate choice, made in full knowledge of the scientific evidence, to adopt a framework that cannot engage honestly with that evidence. The religious thinkers who have managed to reflect seriously on both their faith and the findings of science, without requiring the second to validate the first on a finding-by-finding basis, have not betrayed their tradition. In many cases they have maintained the intellectual seriousness that the tradition at its best has always required. Creationism has not maintained that seriousness. It has replaced it with a public relations strategy.
9. The Strategic Incoherence and Its Consequences
The charge that matters most is not that creationism is theologically mistaken, though it may well be, or that its proponents are unintelligent, which they plainly are not. The charge that matters is that its public strategy is incoherent in a way that has real consequences for science education, for public understanding of evidence, and for the relationship between institutions of knowledge and the communities they serve.
A movement that tells its members that science is authoritative when it appears to confirm Genesis and corrupt when it contradicts Genesis is not producing scientifically literate citizens. It is producing citizens who have been trained to evaluate evidence not on its merits but on its relationship to a predetermined conclusion. That is precisely the opposite of what scientific literacy requires, and it is a disservice not just to the individuals concerned but to any democratic society that depends on its citizens being capable of evaluating evidence on questions that range from climate change to vaccine safety to the reliability of economic data. The epistemological habits formed by the double tactic do not stay confined to questions about the age of the Earth. They are transferable habits of mind, and they transfer.
The consequences are visible in the political sphere. The same communities where young-Earth creationism is strongest tend to show elevated levels of scepticism about the scientific consensus on climate change, on vaccine safety, and on the reliability of expert institutions more broadly. This correlation is not a coincidence, and it is not adequately explained by demographic factors alone. It is, at least in part, a consequence of the fact that a movement that has trained its members to treat scientific consensus as the product of ideological conspiracy, when it conflicts with preferred beliefs, has equipped those members with an epistemological framework that, once adopted, does not stay within the boundaries of theology. The question “is this scientific finding consistent with my prior beliefs?” is not a question that has a theological answer alone. It is a general epistemological stance that operates across the full range of questions on which evidence is relevant.
Creationism’s defenders sometimes argue that the movement is simply defending a legitimate alternative interpretation of evidence and that the scientific community’s rejection of it reflects the same kind of ideological gatekeeping they are accusing science of. This symmetry argument has a certain rhetorical appeal, but it only holds if we accept that the evaluation of evidence is a purely subjective exercise in which all frameworks are equally valid. That premise is false. Some frameworks produce accurate, independently verified, predictively successful accounts of reality, and some do not. The framework of modern evolutionary biology, cosmology, and geochronology has produced a vast body of technology, medicine, and understanding that demonstrably functions in the real world. The young-Earth creationist framework has produced no novel predictions, no technology, and no independently verified findings. The comparison between them is not a comparison between equally valid alternatives. It is a comparison between a method that has demonstrated its reliability across an enormous range of applications and a framework that has adopted the surface appearance of that method while abandoning its substance. The symmetry argument mistakes the existence of a disagreement for the equivalence of the positions in disagreement, which is an error that the movement’s own publications, on their better days, might be expected to recognise.
10. What an Honest Engagement Would Look Like
The most interesting question is not whether creationism is wrong, since the evidence on that point is not genuinely in dispute among people who have examined it honestly and applied consistent standards. The most interesting question is what an intellectually serious engagement between religious belief and scientific findings would actually require, and whether the creationist movement has any interest in conducting one.
An honest engagement would require, at minimum, a consistent epistemological standard. If science is reliable enough to be cited in support of a theological conclusion, it is reliable enough that its conclusions on other questions must be taken seriously. If the cosmic microwave background is to be cited as evidence for Genesis, then the age of the universe derived from the same physics that explains the cosmic microwave background cannot simultaneously be dismissed as the product of a conspiracy. You cannot pick up the CMB and put down the 13.8 billion years. The instrument that gives you one gives you the other, and the methodology that makes one credible makes the other credible too. Consistency is not an optional feature of honest reasoning; it is the definition of it.
An honest engagement would also require a willingness to let the evidence determine the conclusion rather than letting the conclusion determine which evidence is accepted. This is a genuinely demanding requirement, and it is not one that human beings find easy, since all of us are prone to some degree of motivated reasoning in some domains of our lives. But there is a clear difference between a natural and understandable tendency toward motivated reasoning and the construction of an institutional framework designed to make motivated reasoning systematic and to train an entire community in its practice. The first is a human failing that can be corrected by better habits of thought and by exposure to the actual methods and findings of science. The second is a deliberate pedagogy with explicit political goals and a vested interest in making those better habits of thought unavailable to the people being trained.
The honest answer, on the question of what the evidence actually shows, is the one that has been available for decades and that the weight of evidence from every relevant field supports: the Earth is approximately 4.54 billion years old, the universe is approximately 13.8 billion years old, life evolved over hundreds of millions of years through processes that are now well understood in considerable detail, and human beings share common ancestors with other primates in the way that all living things share common ancestors if we look back far enough. None of that is philosophically uninteresting, and none of it precludes questions about meaning, purpose, or value that science itself does not address. But it does preclude the specific claims of young-Earth creationism, and it does so not because of philosophical prejudice or institutional conspiracy but because the evidence is clear, independent, and consistent across an enormous range of methods and disciplines.
The creationist movement, in its current institutional form, is not pursuing an honest engagement with science. It is pursuing a strategy that borrows science’s authority when useful and denounces science’s integrity when not useful, and it is pursuing that strategy in full knowledge that the two moves are logically incompatible. The charge of strategic incoherence is not a soft one. It is the sharpest charge available, because it is the one that is most thoroughly documented in the movement’s own public communications, its own published materials, and its own institutional behaviour. Creationism is not anti-science in the simple sense of being ignorant of scientific findings. It is anti-science in the more precise and more damaging sense of having adopted a framework that makes genuine engagement with scientific evidence structurally impossible. It cannot engage honestly because honest engagement would require it to follow the evidence wherever it leads, and the one place it has decided in advance the evidence cannot lead is to the conclusion that the Genesis account is not a reliable description of the physical history of the cosmos.
The cosmos does not care whether its findings are convenient for a particular reading of a particular ancient text. The evidence that the Earth is 4.54 billion years old, that life evolved over hundreds of millions of years, and that human beings share common ancestors with other primates is not going to change because institutions in Kentucky have built museums asserting otherwise. What can change, and what has changed where honest education has been prioritised, is whether the communities that have been trained in the double tactic have access to the tools of critical thinking that would allow them to evaluate those tactics for what they are. That access is worth defending, and the argument for it is not complicated: a consistent standard of evidence, applied without exception to all claims including the ones we find congenial, is the only method we have that reliably distinguishes what is true from what we would prefer to be true. Creationism, in its current form, is a sustained institutional argument against that standard. It deserves to be recognised as such, and argued against on precisely those grounds, without animosity toward the people who have been taught to believe it, and without any softening of the argument itself.
